Armed suspects nabbed after opening fire on officers
Two young men have been hauled before the Eshowe Magistrate's Court following a dramatic carjacking incident and subsequent shootout with law enforcement in KwaZulu-Natal. Thembinkosi Msane, aged 21, and Khetha Mahlangu, 23, faced charges of carjacking, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and attempted murder when they appeared on Wednesday, 4 October 2017.
The pair were denied immediate release and remanded in custody, with their bail application set for 11 October 2017. Authorities confirmed that two additional suspects remain on the run, though police indicated that further arrests are expected shortly.
The chain of events began in the early hours of Wednesday morning when Eshowe police officers and the Richards Bay Flying Squad were conducting routine crime prevention operations in the area. The members received intelligence regarding four individuals believed to be in possession of a white Isuzu vehicle allegedly taken during an armed house robbery at Esikhaleni on 3 October 2017.
High-speed pursuit ends in gunfire
According to police accounts, two victims were targeted at H2 section in Esikhaleni, where they were forcibly relieved of their vehicle at gunpoint. Officers subsequently located the suspected stolen Isuzu at a petrol station in Eshowe and attempted to intercept it, but the occupants accelerated away at speed.
A high-speed chase ensued, during which the fleeing suspects opened fire on the pursuing officers. Police members returned fire, ultimately bringing the vehicle to a halt. While two of the four suspects managed to escape on foot, Msane and Mahlangu were apprehended at the scene. Remarkably, neither the officers nor the suspects sustained any injuries during the exchange of gunfire, and the stolen vehicle was successfully recovered.
Acting Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Bheki Langa, commended the officers involved for their swift and decisive action, which resulted in the arrests and the recovery of the hijacked vehicle.
"Our police will continue to work hard to make sure KwaZulu-Natal province remain crime-free zone. We appreciate the help of the community in furnishing the police with information," he said.
The case has highlighted the ongoing scourge of vehicle hijackings in the province and the critical role that community tip-offs play in enabling rapid police responses. Officers are continuing their search for the two outstanding suspects, and anyone with information has been urged to come forward.
