Officer shot after pulling over vehicle near Klawer

A West Coast traffic officer is recovering in hospital after being shot by a motorist during a routine vehicle stop on the N7 highway near Paddavlei on Thursday evening. The shocking incident, which occurred at approximately 19:00, has prompted a full-scale attempted murder investigation by Klawer police.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, the officer pulled over a vehicle but the driver refused to comply with instructions. The situation escalated rapidly when the suspect drew a firearm and opened fire on the officer before fleeing the scene at speed.

"The suspect produced a firearm and shot the traffic officer before he sped away from the scene. A member of the public helped the officer and drove him to a police station where paramedics treated him."

The injured officer was subsequently taken in for surgery and is reported to be in a stable condition. No arrests have been made thus far, though authorities have confirmed they are actively pursuing all available leads in connection with the shooting.

Calls for respect and protection of law enforcement

DA councillor in the West Coast district municipality, Leoné Venter, described the attack as far more than a news headline. She emphasised that those tasked with keeping roads safe routinely place themselves in harm's way to protect the public.

"It's a reminder that the people who keep our roads safe put their own safety on the line every day. While many of us spend the festive weekend with family and loved ones, there are officials who sacrifice their time to ensure we get to our destinations safely."

Venter issued a passionate appeal to motorists across the region, urging responsible behaviour and greater respect for traffic officers and all members of law enforcement. She stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility that begins with every individual driver.

"Obey the rules, drive responsibly, and show respect to traffic officers and all law enforcement. They are not there to punish, they are there to save lives. Let's stand together against violence and indifference. Our officials deserve better. They deserve safety. They deserve respect."

The brazen attack has once again thrown the spotlight on the dangers faced by traffic officers across the Western Cape, particularly during peak holiday periods when roads are busiest and tensions among motorists often run high. The investigation remains ongoing.

South African traffic officers face escalating dangers during routine duties, and this shooting on the N7 highlights the growing risks confronting law enforcement personnel tasked with maintaining road safety. For communities along the West Coast corridor, such violence could deter effective policing and embolden criminal behaviour, undermining public safety on one of the Western Cape's busiest freight and travel routes. The ongoing investigation will be closely watched as authorities work to restore confidence in roadside law enforcement operations.
