Waterkloof High School community in mourning after sudden death
A Pretoria schoolgirl has died unexpectedly while attending a Voortrekker fieldwork camp in the North West, sending shockwaves through her school community and the wider youth organisation.
Zané de Jager, a grade 11 pupil at Waterkloof High School, passed away on Wednesday at the Thaba fieldwork camp, situated on a farm roughly 20 kilometres northwest of Brits. The cause of her death has not yet been established.
The main day management of the Voortrekkers confirmed the devastating news in a formal statement, describing it as a loss beyond words.
"This is an indescribable loss. Our hearts go out to her family, relatives, friends, Voortrekkers, the camp management, camp leader and youth members of Thaba and everyone affected by this tragedy."
Karin Stoffberg, the chief leader of the Voortrekkers, told media that camp organisers had maintained constant communication with De Jager's commando leader, Lourens van Staden. Her parents were on holiday in Botswana at the time of the tragedy.
"We pray for comfort and strength from the Holy Spirit in this very difficult time. We offer the family, relatives and everyone who is deeply saddened in our prayers."
The Thaba field camp is an outdoor programme where young people gain hands-on experience in field, survival and life skills under the guidance of expert instructors.
Tributes pour in from schools and Voortrekker commandos
Since the news broke, an outpouring of condolence messages has followed from schools, community members and fellow Voortrekker commandos across the country. Waterkloof High School paid tribute to De Jager, remembering her warmth and character. The school said it bid farewell to the young learner with great sadness, adding that her beautiful smile and humanity would be forever cherished within the school community.
Laerskool Monumentpark, where De Jager attended primary school, also extended heartfelt condolences, urging those in mourning to find solace in faith. The school shared a passage from Psalm 34:19, reading: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, He saves the faint of heart."
Several Voortrekker commandos likewise expressed their solidarity. The Sytze Wierda Voortrekkers conveyed their deepest sympathy to the De Jager family and the broader community, saying their thoughts and prayers were with all those affected during this particularly difficult period. Rietvallei Voortrekkers echoed the sentiment, stating that in times such as these, communities draw closer together. They carried the family in their prayers and thoughts, bidding De Jager a final farewell.
