Seven jailed for kidnapping and extortion of 13-year-old girl in Kriel - crime and justice in South Africa

Gang demanded R200 000 ransom, threatened to kill child

A group of seven people have each been handed four-year prison sentences after being convicted of abducting a teenage girl and extorting her family in a scheme that spanned two provinces.

The convicted individuals — four women and three men — were found guilty following a comprehensive investigation conducted jointly by multiple law enforcement units. Lt. Col. Magonseni Nkosi, spokesperson for the Hawks, confirmed the sentences had been handed down.

The ordeal began in Kriel when the primary suspects, Nelisiwe Mkhwanazi (33), Caleb Sebatane (25), and siblings Dineo (44) and Dumisani Zondo (34), seized the 13-year-old victim and fled in a white Toyota Starlet bearing Gauteng registration plates. Three additional accomplices — Thabang Mndebele (47), Patricia Mkhize (44) and Emelda Nkosi (40) — subsequently joined the operation, taking on the role of pressuring the child's mother for payment.

The gang issued demands for R200 000 in ransom money, warning that they would murder the girl should the funds not be forthcoming. Under duress, the mother made four separate electronic transfers totalling an undisclosed sum to her daughter's captors.

Arrests and rescue operation

A breakthrough came when Sebatane and Mndebele were apprehended by the Gauteng flash patrol unit at a shopping centre in Vereeniging. The pair were in the process of withdrawing cash and were found carrying R9 000, believed to be proceeds from the ransom payments. Officers also recovered the vehicle used to carry out the abduction.

Subsequent investigative work led detectives to an informal settlement in Vosloorus, where the young girl was discovered alive and unharmed inside a shack. The Zondo siblings were found at the location, allegedly standing guard over the victim. Mkhize, Nkosi and Mkhwanazi were taken into custody shortly thereafter, completing the round-up of all seven suspects.

Following their initial court appearance, all accused were denied bail and remained behind bars throughout the duration of proceedings leading to their conviction and sentencing.

Maj. Gen. Nico Gerber, the provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, commended the collaborative effort that brought the case to a successful conclusion.

"The swift and coordinated action of our members, together with the National Prosecuting Authority and the courts, ensured that justice was done for the victim, her family and the community."

The conviction of all seven suspects sends a firm signal about law enforcement's capacity to tackle cross-provincial kidnapping syndicates, a growing concern for families in smaller towns like Kriel where such crimes were once rare. For local communities, the case underscores vulnerabilities in child safety and the exploitation of electronic payment systems for ransom. Whether the relatively lenient four-year sentences will effectively deter similar organised abduction schemes remains to be seen.
