Convicted killers of two police officers to be sentenced by High Court - crime and justice in South Africa

Officers ambushed while on duty in 2022

Two men found guilty of gunning down a pair of South African Police Service members during a brazen ambush in Gauteng are set to learn their fate when they appear for sentencing at the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on 27 May 2025.

Hlulani Mabuza, 32, and Sihle Ntuli, 29, were convicted on Tuesday, 8 April 2025, on a string of serious charges including two counts of attempted murder, two counts of armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The convictions stem from a deadly encounter on the evening of 21 October 2022. According to investigators, Sergeant Vusi Batsha, 45, and Constable Kgotso Malahlela, 24, were carrying out an inquest at the intersection of Field and Main Reef Road in Lilianton at roughly 21:45 when they were set upon by armed assailants.

The attackers confronted the two officers and demanded they surrender their service firearms. A violent struggle ensued, during which Sergeant Batsha was shot and killed at the scene. Constable Malahlela attempted to find cover but was fatally wounded moments later. Both officers' service weapons were taken by the suspects.

"The accused demanded their service firearms, leading to a fatal struggle."

Arrests followed intensive investigation

A sustained investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation eventually produced a breakthrough on 22 April 2023. Members of the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, working alongside Gauteng Special Law Enforcement officials, apprehended Mabuza together with two accomplices at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

Ntuli was tracked down and arrested separately on 24 May 2023 at the Harrismith Correctional Services facility in the Free State, following continued intelligence-driven police work.

The case highlighted the grave dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and the determination of investigators to bring those responsible to justice. Both convicted men now await what is expected to be a lengthy prison sentence when they stand before the High Court bench.

The ambush killing of two police officers in Gauteng underscores the escalating threat facing law enforcement personnel across South Africa, where attacks on officers have steadily risen in recent years. For communities already grappling with high crime rates, the loss of frontline officers weakens policing capacity and erodes public confidence in safety. The upcoming sentencing may serve as a deterrent, though sustained investment in officer protection and crime intelligence remains critical to addressing the broader crisis.
