A woman was apprehended at a petrol station in Upington on Friday after law enforcement officers discovered a substantial stash of dagga concealed in her luggage, valued at an estimated R670 500 on the street.

Intelligence-led operation leads to swift arrest

Officers from the Upington Crime Prevention Unit carried out the operation following intelligence gathered about the suspect's movements. Upon reaching the identified fuel station, members quickly spotted a woman who matched the description they had been given.

A thorough search of three bags in the suspect's possession uncovered a large quantity of dagga. She was promptly taken into custody and charged with dealing in the prohibited substance.

"The members acted swiftly on the information received, which led to the successful arrest and confiscation of the drugs."

The arrest marks another significant drug seizure in the Northern Cape as authorities continue to clamp down on the movement of narcotics through the province's towns and transport routes.

Senior officer hails community cooperation

ZF Mgcawu District Commissioner Major General Monica Sebili praised the unit for their rapid response, which resulted in both the arrest and the removal of a considerable volume of drugs from circulation.

Major General Sebili also acknowledged the critical role played by members of the public in combating drug-related crime. She noted that tip-offs and information from community members remain instrumental in helping police identify and intercept suspects before illicit substances reach the streets.

"The continued support from the community contributes significantly to the fight against crime and the removal of drugs from communities."

The suspect is expected to appear in the Upington Magistrate's Court in due course to face charges of dealing in dagga. Police have urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activity to assist in keeping their neighbourhoods safe.

Drug trafficking through the Northern Cape remains a persistent challenge, with transport corridors linking major growing regions to urban markets across South Africa. Seizures of this scale disrupt supply chains that fuel substance abuse and related crime in smaller towns like Upington, where local economies and communities bear the brunt of drug-related social harm. Continued intelligence-led policing and community cooperation will be critical in sustaining pressure on trafficking networks operating along these routes.
