Three men arrested during a police operation in Dennilton, Limpopo, are set to appear before the Moutse Magistrate Court on Monday, 8 August 2022, on charges of possessing an illegal firearm. The suspects, aged between 32 and 34, were taken into custody following a late-night vehicle stop on the R25 road.
Late-night operation yields unlicensed weapon
Officers on patrol in the Dennilton policing precinct on Thursday evening, 4 August 2022, noticed a suspicious motor vehicle travelling along the R25 road at approximately 22:45. Acting swiftly, they executed a tactical stop and discovered three occupants inside the car.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of an unlicensed firearm fitted with an empty magazine. All three individuals were placed under arrest without delay at the scene.
Initial police enquiries established that the vehicle is registered to one of the accused. However, it has been impounded to allow investigators to probe whether it may be linked to any other criminal activity in the region.
Firearm sent for ballistic testing
Detectives noted that the serial numbers on the recovered weapon had been deliberately filed off, raising suspicions that it may have been used in previous serious offences. The firearm has been sent for ballistic analysis to determine whether it can be connected to any unsolved crimes.
"The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the members for arresting these suspects and fearlessly performing their daily activities of keeping the citizens of this province safe."
