A seasoned police officer with more than three decades of service has been appointed as the new station commander of the Bramley police station in Johannesburg, in a move that district leadership says will bolster crime-fighting efforts in the area.
Veteran officer brings 35 years of policing experience
Colonel Chetty, who joined the South African Police Service in 1991, has been officially welcomed into his new role by the Johannesburg district management. The announcement was made by the office of the District Commissioner for Johannesburg, Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka, during a District crime combating forum meeting.
Over the course of his lengthy career, Colonel Chetty has served at a number of police stations across Gauteng, including Sebenza, Midrand, Ivory Park, Edenvale, and Reiger Park. These postings provided him with wide-ranging operational knowledge and hands-on policing experience across diverse communities.
He has occupied several senior positions during his time in the service, working as an Operational Commander, a Vispol Commander, and as a detective. Before his latest appointment, he held the post of station commander at Reiger Park.
"I am a dedicated and committed police officer with a strong passion for policing and a firm stance against corruption," Colonel Chetty said.
Open-door approach and community partnerships
The newly installed commander has pledged to adopt an open-door policy at the Bramley station, signalling his intention to be accessible to both officers and residents alike. He expressed his eagerness to collaborate with fellow law enforcement agencies, the Community Police Forum, and members of the public to strengthen safety in the precinct.
Colonel Chetty indicated that his primary objective is to transform the Bramley policing area into a crime-free zone, drawing on the extensive expertise he has accumulated over 35 years in uniform.
Major General Kubheka voiced her full confidence in the new station commander's ability to lead effectively. The District Commissioner wished Colonel Chetty well as he embarks on his latest assignment, expressing optimism that his appointment will yield positive results for the community.
The appointment of an experienced station commander at Bramley comes amid persistent concerns about crime levels in Johannesburg's suburban areas, where residents and businesses depend heavily on effective local policing. A leadership change at station level can directly influence response times, community trust, and coordination with private security and neighbourhood watch groups. Whether Colonel Chetty's pledged community partnerships translate into measurable safety improvements will likely become apparent in coming months as crime statistics are monitored.
