Drug haul seized on Caledon road

Law enforcement officers in the Western Cape have apprehended two suspects in separate operations targeting drug trafficking and the possession of stolen goods, authorities confirmed.

Members of the Caledon policing cluster acted on a tip-off regarding a silver Volkswagen Polo allegedly being used to ferry narcotics on Monday. The vehicle was intercepted along the R406 route in Caledon and subjected to a thorough search.

Officers discovered 150 mandrax tablets, dagga, and seven cellphones along with their accessories concealed inside the car. The 34-year-old driver was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the drugs or the items found in his possession.

"The 34-year-old suspect could not give an account for the drugs and the items in his vehicle and was arrested for the possession of drugs."

The man was taken into custody on charges of drug possession and was expected to make his first appearance before the Caledon Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Stolen property uncovered in Pelican Park

In a separate incident on Monday afternoon, 23 March 2026, officers attached to Operation Shanela II descended on a property in Fish Street, Pelican Park, following intelligence that stolen items were being kept at the address.

A search of the premises yielded three digital cameras, a PlayStation console with four controllers, and four cellphones. A 26-year-old man found at the residence was unable to account for the recovered items and was promptly placed under arrest for possession of presumed stolen property.

"A 26-year-old male who was found in the house could account for the items and was arrested for the possession of presumed stolen property."

The suspect is set to appear before the Wynberg Magistrates' Court once formal charges have been laid against him. Both arrests form part of ongoing efforts by Western Cape police to clamp down on criminal activity across the province through intelligence-driven operations.

South Africans in the Western Cape continue to face the intertwined challenges of drug trafficking and property crime, both of which erode community safety and strain local economies reliant on stable, secure environments. These intelligence-driven arrests signal that law enforcement is increasingly leveraging tip-offs to disrupt criminal networks, which could deter future offenders. Whether these operations translate into sustained reductions in crime will depend on successful prosecutions and continued collaboration between police and the communities they serve.
