Learners educated on abuse and their rights

Approximately 100 primary school pupils gathered at the Lime Acres Recreational Club on Monday as law enforcement officers in the Northern Cape officially kicked off the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign with a dedicated awareness drive targeting young people.

Learners from Lime Acres Primary, Norven Primary and Shaleje Primary Schools were the focus of the event, which saw multiple policing units join forces to educate children about sexual abuse and the various forms of mistreatment that affect minors across the province.

The Postmasburg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit collaborated with the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit as well as Visible Policing members stationed in both Lime Acres and Postmasburg to host the awareness session.

Officers urge children to speak out

Warrant Officer Debora Bob, who heads the Postmasburg FCS Unit, spoke directly to the young attendees about their fundamental rights and the importance of refusing to accept bullying or any other kind of abusive behaviour.

"Children need to understand that they have the right to stand up against bullying and any other form of abuse," Warrant Officer Bob told media.

Lt Col Raymond, the Provincial Forensic Social Worker, also addressed the gathering, outlining the professional support services available to children who have experienced abuse. Raymond explained the role forensic social workers play in assisting young victims through the reporting and recovery process.

The event concluded with a drill display performed for the learners, capping off an interactive morning designed to leave a lasting impression on the young audience about their safety and well-being.

Organisers confirmed that the 16 Days programme will extend well beyond the launch event, with a series of roadblocks and public awareness activities planned across the Postmasburg, Lime Acres and Daniëlskuil areas for the full duration of the campaign.

South Africa's Northern Cape province faces persistently high rates of gender-based violence and child abuse, making grassroots prevention efforts in rural towns like Postmasburg essential for reaching vulnerable communities often underserved by support networks. Early education initiatives that teach children to recognise abuse and access professional help can reduce long-term trauma and ease pressure on overburdened social services. The campaign's expansion across surrounding areas signals a sustained effort that could strengthen community trust in law enforcement.
