Law enforcement agencies in the Free State have made significant headway in their fight against crime, arresting a total of 1 356 suspects during an intensive multi-disciplinary policing drive conducted over the past week. The arrests, carried out under Operation Shanela, focused on cracking down on illegal contraband, vehicle-related offences, and unlawful firearms possession across the province.

Thousands searched as police cast wide net

The scale of the operation was considerable, with officers searching 36 580 individuals and inspecting 12 321 vehicles at roadblocks and control points throughout the Free State. A further 855 premises were raided during tracking and tracing exercises undertaken alongside Detective Services. Among the offences targeted were drug crimes, unlicensed firearm possession, dealing in stolen goods, vehicle theft, and the detention of undocumented foreign nationals.

A substantial haul of evidence was confiscated during the crackdown, including ammunition, precious stones, and various narcotics such as Nyaope, Khat, and Mandrax. A high-intensity raid by the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit at a property in Heidedal on Friday, 20 March 2026, proved particularly fruitful. The two-hour operation resulted in several arrests linked to drug dealing, illegal ammunition possession, and robbery. Additional drug seizures took place in Kroonstad, where both Dagga and Crystal Meth were recovered.

Efforts to stamp out the illicit trade in precious minerals also continued to deliver results in Parkweg. On Sunday, 22 March 2026, members of the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit apprehended a 39-year-old man found in possession of an uncertified precious stone.

Stolen livestock, school property among seized items

In Kroonstad on Sunday, 22 March 2026, a 47-year-old woman was taken into custody after two sheep carcasses, believed to have been stolen, were discovered concealed inside her residence. Meanwhile, in the Amelia section of Zamdela on the same day, an intelligence-led operation resulted in the arrest of a 47-year-old man suspected of possessing stolen property. Corrugated iron sheets and ceiling panels belonging to a local school were found at his home.

In a bid to combat Cash-in-Transit robberies and ATM bombings, Vala Umgodi operatives detained three individuals and seized 60 explosive units. The accused are expected to appear before the Thabong Magistrate's Court in due course. In Bloemfontein on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, members of the Mangaung Metro Visible Policing Unit and Public Order Police carried out a roadblock on the N1 National Road in the Navalsig precinct, where a man was arrested for possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Among the 1 356 arrests, 72 suspects were detained for possession of suspected stolen property, 67 for drug possession and dealing, 39 for malicious damage to property, and 51 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. Traffic officers handed out 335 fines for various road traffic violations, while 324 of the total arrests were made specifically during crime detection operations.

"A collaborative approach always carries the team to greater heights."

Acting Free State Provincial Commissioner, Major General Apaphia Modise, emphasised that the integrated policing strategy would continue and remain inclusive in its scope. The sustained pressure on criminal networks across the province signals a determined effort by authorities to restore safety and order in communities throughout the Free State.
