Intelligence-led raid uncovers stolen property in Amelia

A 47-year-old man was taken into custody after law enforcement officers recovered building materials believed to have been stolen from a local school during a late-night operation in the Free State.

The arrest took place in the early hours of Friday, 20 March 2026, at approximately 00:20, when police units from Sasolburg Highway Relief A, Zamdela CPU Team 2, and Viljoensdrift CSC Relief C descended on a residence in the Amelia section following an intelligence tip-off about stolen property.

Officers had received information that building materials belonging to a school in Amelia had been taken and were being kept at a nearby home. Acting swiftly on the lead, members proceeded to the identified address and carried out a thorough search of the premises.

"During the operation, 42 corrugated iron sheets and 29 ceiling boards were recovered."

The recovered items are believed to be the property of the Amelia school, and investigators are working to confirm the link between the seized materials and a theft reported at the educational facility. The substantial haul suggests a significant loss for the school, which would have faced disruption to its infrastructure.

Homeowner faces court appearance

The suspect, identified as the owner of the residence where the materials were discovered, was placed under arrest at the scene without incident. He faces charges related to the possession of suspected stolen property.

The accused is expected to make his first appearance before the Sasolburg Magistrate's Court in the coming days, where he will formally face the charges laid against him. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the theft.

The successful operation highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing in the Free State, with multiple units coordinating their efforts to act on community-sourced information and recover stolen goods. Theft of building materials from schools remains a persistent challenge in many parts of South Africa, depriving learners of safe and functional learning environments.
