Child discovered in pool of blood

An 18-year-old has been taken into custody following the violent killing of a four-year-old boy at a residence in Walmer, Gqeberha, in the early hours of Sunday, 22 March 2026. The teenager was apprehended at the scene and is set to face a murder charge.

Police were called to a home in Tshanga Street in the Walmer location at roughly 01:45 after receiving reports of a fatal incident. When officers arrived, they found the young child's body lying in a pool of blood inside the dwelling.

Investigators have established that the boy had been asleep in a room shared with his older brother when the attack took place. The children's parents grew worried during the night and went to check on them, only to make the horrifying discovery that the younger child was drenched in blood.

"The parents reportedly became concerned and went to check and they found him covered in blood. They immediately contacted the police for assistance."

Emergency services and law enforcement responded swiftly to the distress call. The suspect, described as a foreign national, was identified and arrested while still present at the scene. The deceased child has also been identified as a foreign national.

Motive remains unclear as probe continues

Authorities have confirmed that the reason behind the brutal attack on the defenceless child has not yet been determined. Detectives are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry as they work to piece together the circumstances that led to the killing.

The case has sent shockwaves through the Walmer community, where residents have expressed disbelief that such a young life could be taken in so violent a manner. The arrest of a teenager in connection with the crime has added a further layer of distress to an already harrowing incident.

The accused is expected to make his first appearance before the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court in the course of this week, where he will formally face a charge of murder. Further details surrounding the case are anticipated to emerge as the investigation progresses.

South Africans continue to grapple with alarming levels of violent crime affecting the most vulnerable members of society, particularly children. This case highlights ongoing concerns about child safety within homes and communities across the country. For residents of Walmer and surrounding areas, the incident deepens anxiety about neighbourhood security. As the investigation unfolds and the accused appears in court, the outcome may influence public discourse around juvenile violence prevention and community protection measures nationwide.
