A gang of at least eight armed individuals disguised in G4S uniforms and balaclavas launched a brazen raid on the G4S Cash Solutions facility in Boksburg on Saturday, 14 June 2025, overpowering staff before abandoning the heist when they feared detection.
Suspects overpower employees in uniform ruse
According to a statement from the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, three suspects wearing the security company's branded clothing and face coverings gained initial access to the Boksburg premises. Once inside the building, they confronted five employees who were on duty at the time.
The trio swiftly disarmed all five workers and bound their legs, rendering them unable to raise the alarm or resist. Moments later, approximately five additional suspects entered the facility, bringing the total number of attackers to around eight.
"The suspects proceeded to use a grinder in order to gain access into the main office."
The group deployed an angle grinder to attempt to break through security barriers protecting the main office area, where cash holdings are believed to have been stored. The noise and time required for this method of forced entry would prove to be their undoing.
Lookout's warning sparks hasty retreat
While the gang worked to cut their way into the secured office, one of their accomplices had been stationed outside as a lookout. This individual suddenly rushed back into the building to alert the rest of the group that he had spotted a security guard from a neighbouring company in the vicinity.
The lookout warned that the guard may have already been calling for assistance, prompting the entire group to abandon the operation immediately. The suspects hastily gathered their equipment and fled the scene in a Hyundai H1 vehicle.
The Hawks in Gauteng have taken over the investigation into the attempted robbery. The use of authentic-looking security uniforms suggests a degree of planning and possible insider knowledge, raising concerns about the sophistication of the criminal syndicate involved. No injuries to the five employees were reported in the statement, though they were left restrained at the scene.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the suspects or the white Hyundai H1 used as the getaway vehicle to contact the Hawks or report tips anonymously through Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
South Africans face growing risks from increasingly sophisticated criminal syndicates targeting cash-handling infrastructure, as this attempted heist demonstrates how stolen uniforms and possible insider knowledge can compromise even well-secured facilities. Such attacks threaten the broader cash-in-transit industry, potentially raising security costs for businesses and affecting employment in the sector. The Hawks' swift involvement signals law enforcement prioritisation, though whether arrests follow will test investigative capacity and public confidence in combating organised crime.
