Firearms and drugs seized across multiple locations

Law enforcement officers across the Western Cape conducted a series of successful crime prevention operations over the weekend, resulting in numerous arrests and the confiscation of illegal firearms, ammunition and narcotics from several communities.

The crackdown began on Friday evening in Cloetesville in the Cape Winelands, where crime prevention members on routine patrol noticed two men in Primrose Street and moved to intercept them. Both individuals attempted to flee but were quickly apprehended after a brief pursuit. A subsequent search uncovered two 9mm firearms with their serial numbers deliberately removed, a home-made firearm and rounds of ammunition. The two suspects, aged 26 and 28, were taken into custody on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

On Saturday, the Boland K9 Unit working alongside Darling police acted on critical intelligence that led them to Grey Street, where they recovered a 9mm Vector Parabellum pistol believed to have been stolen in Cambridge in the Eastern Cape back in 2019. Officers also confiscated substantial quantities of dagga and crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as tik. A 25-year-old man with alleged gang affiliations was arrested at the scene and charged with illegal possession of a firearm, ammunition and drugs.

"The efforts of the members are applauded as they, without fail, venture out to create safety in communities."

Drug hauls and stolen vehicle recovered

In a separate operation on Friday in Leonsdale, Elsies River crime prevention officers followed up on information regarding drug dealing activity in the area. The investigation led to the arrest of a 53-year-old suspect who was found in possession of 154 parcels of dagga with a combined weight of 23,5 kilograms.

Members of the Provincial Integrated Team, supported by crime intelligence officials, also carried out a raid on a property in KTC, Gugulethu, where they discovered a stolen vehicle and arrested a 59-year-old suspect. The vehicle, which had been reported stolen in Lansdowne, had already been partially stripped for parts at the time of its recovery.

Additional operations conducted between Friday and Saturday in Kraaifontein and Parow resulted in the seizure of two more unlicensed firearms and the arrest of two further suspects on charges of illegal possession.

All individuals taken into custody during the weekend operations are expected to make their first appearances in various magistrates' courts on Monday to face the charges brought against them. The widespread nature of the operations underscored the continued commitment of Western Cape law enforcement to dismantling criminal networks and restoring safety across affected communities.

South Africans living in gang-affected communities across the Western Cape face daily threats from illegal firearms and drug trafficking, making coordinated law enforcement operations critical to public safety and economic stability in these areas. The recovery of stolen property and removal of weapons from circulation can help reduce violent crime that deters investment and disrupts livelihoods. Sustained pressure on criminal networks will be essential to achieving lasting improvements in community safety and restoring public confidence.
