A 47-year-old Northern Cape man has been sentenced to a combined 38 years behind bars after fatally shooting his girlfriend in Modderrivier during a violent domestic incident in 2023.
Fatal shooting in Modderrivier
Andries Mano Buffel was convicted by the Northern Cape High Court following the tragic events of 7 June 2023. On that Wednesday evening, at approximately 21:00, law enforcement officers in Modderrivier responded to reports of a shooting. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered two adults lying on the ground, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both individuals were rushed to hospital for emergency medical treatment. Tragically, the female victim did not survive and succumbed to her injuries.
During court proceedings, it emerged that Buffel had stolen a firearm belonging to his brother. He allegedly used the weapon to shoot his girlfriend before turning it on himself. Buffel survived his self-inflicted injuries and was subsequently arrested.
Court hands down lengthy sentence
The presiding court found Buffel guilty on multiple charges. He received 22 years' imprisonment for murder, eight years for the unlawful possession of a firearm, five years for the unlawful possession of ammunition, and three years for theft. All sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective 22-year prison term.
The investigating officer had successfully argued against granting bail during the pre-trial phase, ensuring Buffel remained in custody throughout the legal proceedings. The court further declared Buffel unfit to possess a firearm.
"The Northern Cape Management welcomes the conviction and praised Detective Constable Vuyani Links for his thorough investigation."
Provincial police leadership commended the diligent work of Detective Constable Vuyani Links, whose meticulous investigation ensured that justice was served for the victim and her family.
