Stakeholders rally behind youth-led safety initiatives

Residents of Zastron in the Free State came together in a show of unity against gender-based violence during a landmark awareness event held at Lere la Thuto School Hall. The gathering, organised in collaboration with the Zastron Youth Crime Prevention Desk (YCPD), also served as a commemoration of Human Rights Day, drawing a wide range of community members and organisations committed to tackling GBV.

The event attracted participation from across the social spectrum, with the local ward councillor delivering a message of solidarity. Several non-governmental organisations and community structures dedicated to combating gender-based violence were also present, alongside members of the local Kaizer Chiefs branch, who added their voice of support to the proceedings.

YCPD representatives from various stations throughout the district attended in a display of collective resolve. District Co-ordinator Sergeant Stefaans formally presented provincial YCPD members from the Xhariep District as well as district-level members, explaining their involvement in safety programmes at schools and within the broader community. Sergeant Majeu of Zastron then introduced the local YCPD contingent, reaffirming ongoing backing for crime prevention efforts driven by young people.

Men's Forum challenges harmful behaviour

A significant contribution came from the Men's Forum, which tackled GBV head-on by highlighting the duty of men to confront destructive norms, embrace positive masculinity and stand with survivors. Their message underscored the need for accountability and active participation from men in the fight against abuse.

"We affirm a collective commitment to protect the vulnerable, report abuse and uphold human rights."

In one of the most powerful moments of the day, community members rose to take a formal oath and recite a pledge against gender-based violence. The collective declaration represented a shared promise to safeguard those most at risk and to ensure that perpetrators are held to account through proper reporting channels.

Local NGOs played a vital role by providing practical guidance on victim support services and referral pathways, equipping attendees with the knowledge they need to access assistance. The information shared aimed to bridge the gap between survivors and the help available to them, ensuring that no one in the community is left without recourse.

The commemoration placed strong emphasis on the constitutional rights to dignity, equality and personal safety. It also served to deepen collaboration between law enforcement, the YCPD at provincial, district and local levels, the ward councillor's office, NGOs and the Men's Forum. These strengthened partnerships are expected to bolster reporting mechanisms and improve access to support services going forward.

Gratitude was expressed to Lere la Thuto School for making its facilities available, as well as to all dignitaries, partner organisations and community members whose attendance and dedication are helping to build safer neighbourhoods in the Zastron area.

South Africa continues to face one of the highest rates of gender-based violence globally, making grassroots mobilisation like the Zastron gathering critical for rural communities often underserved by support infrastructure. The collaboration between law enforcement, youth structures, NGOs and civic leaders could strengthen reporting systems and victim access to services in the Xhariep District. If sustained, such multi-stakeholder partnerships may serve as a replicable model for other small towns grappling with similar challenges across the Free State and beyond.
