House set ablaze following alleged assault on toddler

Authorities in Limpopo are searching for a man accused of deliberately burning down his girlfriend's home in Makonde Shadani Village near Thohoyandou, after a domestic altercation reportedly spiralled out of control on Saturday evening.

The incident unfolded on 14 March 2026 at around 19:00, when the suspect allegedly set fire to the three-roomed dwelling belonging to his 32-year-old girlfriend. The woman was not at home at the time, having gone to visit her mother elsewhere in the area.

Investigators believe the chain of events began when the suspect allegedly assaulted the complainant's three-year-old child. Older siblings of the toddler reportedly stepped in to protect the minor, confronting the man over his behaviour.

"It is alleged that the incident emanated from a domestic dispute after the suspect allegedly assaulted the complainant's three-year-old child. The child's siblings reportedly intervened to defend the minor, which allegedly led to the suspect setting the house alight before fleeing the scene."

Rather than de-escalating the situation, the suspect allegedly retaliated by setting the entire house on fire. He then fled the premises before anyone could intervene or apprehend him. The complainant only learnt of the destruction after a family member contacted her to relay the devastating news.

Damage exceeds R25 000 as investigation continues

The blaze caused extensive damage to the structure, with preliminary estimates placing the total cost of the destruction at more than R25 000. The residence, which consisted of three rooms, was severely gutted in the fire.

A case of domestic-related arson has since been registered at the Thohoyandou police station in the Vhembe District. Detectives have confirmed that the suspect is known to law enforcement and originally hails from Makonde Village, though he remains on the run.

The manhunt for the alleged arsonist is ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to come forward. Investigations into the full circumstances surrounding the domestic dispute and subsequent fire are continuing.

Gender-based violence remains one of South Africa's most pressing crises, and incidents like this highlight how domestic disputes can escalate into devastating outcomes for entire families, including young children. The destruction of a home valued at over R25 000 represents a significant financial blow in a rural community where resources are already limited. The ongoing manhunt will test local law enforcement capacity, while the case underscores the urgent need for stronger protective measures in vulnerable households.
