Weekend of violence leaves three dead in North West
A deadly sequence of events that began with a workplace dispute in Ikageng left three people dead over the first weekend of July 2022, after a 32-year-old man allegedly shot a driver, kidnapped a colleague, and was later killed during a high-speed pursuit with law enforcement.
The chain of violence was set in motion on Friday evening, 1 July 2022, when the suspect overpowered and disarmed a 47-year-old male colleague during a heated argument in Mbobi Street, Ikageng. After seizing the older man's firearm, the suspect reportedly forced his victim at gunpoint to telephone his 31-year-old girlfriend.
The woman arrived shortly afterwards in a Volkswagen Polo, accompanied by a 30-year-old male who was behind the wheel. According to investigators, the suspect approached the vehicle and discharged two rounds at the driver before dragging him from the car. The driver was fatally wounded.
"The suspect then instructed his colleague to climb into the rear of the vehicle and drove away from the scene,"
police confirmed. The armed man halted briefly at a junction in Bathoeng Street, where he ordered his captive colleague out of the car before fleeing with his girlfriend still inside the Polo.
Fatal pursuit on Ottosdal-Hartbeesfontein Road
Officers were dispatched to the murder scene and circulated a description of the wanted Volkswagen Polo. On Saturday afternoon, 2 July 2022, members of the Flying Squad received intelligence that the vehicle was travelling along the Ottosdal/Hartbeesfontein Road. When officers located the Polo, the driver accelerated and a pursuit ensued.
During the chase, the man at the wheel reportedly aimed his firearm at the pursuing officers, who responded by discharging several rounds. The vehicle eventually left the road and came to a stop. When police reached the car, they discovered the suspect had sustained a fatal bullet wound to the head. Emergency Medical Rescue Services attended the scene and pronounced him dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
Officers also found the body of the 31-year-old woman on the front passenger seat. She had sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation as part of an inquest docket.
"We are shocked by this tragic incident and call on communities to seek amicable solutions to their problems rather than resorting to violence,"
said North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena. Ikageng police have opened cases of kidnapping, robbery, double murder and an inquest in connection with the weekend's events.
