Brutal attack on mother and son in Tsembeyi

Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt for a suspect who allegedly raped and stabbed an elderly woman before also attacking her son during a violent home invasion at Tsembeyi Administrative Area.

The horrific incident unfolded between 20:00 and the early hours of 24 September 2019, when the suspect reportedly broke through a window of the victim's home while she was asleep.

According to police, the intruder forced his way into the residence and sexually assaulted the elderly woman before stabbing her. Her son, who had been sleeping in a separate room, heard the commotion and rushed in to try to protect his mother.

"The victim's son entered in order to rescue his mother but the suspect also stabbed the son and thereafter fled the scene."

Both the elderly woman and her son sustained injuries during the attack and were rushed to hospital after law enforcement officers arrived at the scene.

Authorities appeal for information

The Provincial Commissioner's office confirmed that investigators are actively pursuing the suspect, who remains at large following the brutal assault. Police have urged anyone with information that could lead to an arrest to come forward without delay.

Gender-based violence against elderly women in rural communities remains a grave concern across the Eastern Cape. Incidents of this nature have prompted renewed calls for increased police visibility and community safety initiatives in remote administrative areas.

The case has been registered and detectives are following up on all available leads to bring the perpetrator to justice. Both victims were reported to be receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

South Africans living in rural communities face heightened vulnerability to violent crime, particularly elderly women who remain disproportionately affected by gender-based violence in remote areas like the Eastern Cape. This attack underscores persistent gaps in security infrastructure and police presence across administrative areas far from urban centres. For local residents and businesses, such incidents erode community safety and economic stability. Strengthened law enforcement deployment and community-driven safety initiatives will be critical to preventing future attacks.
