Children discover mother's body after school

A 45-year-old man is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 4 June 2025, after being arrested for the murder of a 41-year-old woman who was the mother of his children.

The fatal incident took place on Monday, 2 June 2025, at the victim's home in Bashego village, where she had been living with her children. It is alleged that the suspect forced his way into the residence, leading to a heated confrontation that escalated into a physical altercation between the pair.

After the initial clash, the man reportedly left the property. However, while making his way from the scene, he allegedly found a rope and returned to the home, where he is said to have strangled the woman around her neck. The victim was left unconscious as the suspect fled.

"The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms and called upon couples to seek professional help when experiencing domestic related challenges."

The grim discovery was made when the victim's two children arrived home from school later that day. They found their 11-month-old sibling outside the dwelling and their mother lying on the ground bearing visible injuries to her upper body. The distressed children immediately alerted family members, who in turn contacted emergency services and law enforcement.

Suspect traced and linked to the scene

Paramedics who responded to the call were unable to save the woman, and she was certified dead at the scene. A murder docket was promptly registered and a police investigation launched without delay.

Through swift investigative work, officers managed to track down the suspect, who was found in possession of evidence connecting him directly to the crime scene. He was placed under arrest on a charge of murder and is being held in custody ahead of his court appearance.

Lieutenant General Hadebe urged members of the public who find themselves in troubled domestic situations to seek assistance from qualified professionals rather than resorting to violence. Police investigations into the matter are continuing.

South Africans continue to face alarming levels of gender-based violence, with domestic disputes too often ending in fatal outcomes that leave children traumatized and families shattered. Cases like this place additional strain on community support systems, child welfare services, and an already burdened criminal justice system. Swift police action in this instance may offer some reassurance, but sustained investment in accessible intervention programmes and stronger protective measures remains critical to addressing the deeper roots of domestic violence nationwide.
