Woman killed, man dies in hospital after Mkhuhlu ambush shooting - crime and justice in South Africa

Deadly ambush leaves two dead near Senyameni stream

A young woman was shot dead and a man fatally wounded when gunmen ambushed their vehicle near a stream in Senyameni, Mkhuhlu, on Wednesday evening, sparking an intensive manhunt across the Mpumalanga lowveld.

The attack unfolded at approximately 19:49 on 25 March 2026 when two armed suspects reportedly approached a white Toyota double cab bearing Mpumalanga registration plates as it travelled along a road in the area. The occupants were heading home when the gunmen opened fire without warning.

Officers from the Calcutta police station who rushed to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire discovered the body of a 28-year-old woman inside the vehicle. She had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to her upper body and was declared dead at the scene.

The driver, a 49-year-old man, had reportedly attempted to reverse the vehicle to escape the hail of bullets. However, the bakkie struck a ditch during the desperate manoeuvre and came to a halt. The man, who sustained serious gunshot injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to his wounds shortly afterwards.

Three-year-old survives ordeal as police launch manhunt

A three-year-old child who was also travelling in the vehicle at the time of the attack survived the terrifying ordeal. Authorities have classified the toddler as a victim of attempted murder. The youngster's current condition has not been disclosed.

The two suspects, described as unidentified males carrying firearms, fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Police have confirmed that the attackers have not yet been identified and that the motive behind the brutal assault remains unclear. Detectives are pursuing all available leads to establish what prompted the deadly attack.

"We condemn this senseless and violent attack in the strongest possible terms. The loss of life, including that of a woman, and the endangerment of a young child is deeply concerning. Our members are working tirelessly to ensure that those responsible are brought to book."

These were the words of Acting Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, who vowed that every available resource had been deployed to track down and apprehend the perpetrators. The senior officer gave his assurance to the Mkhuhlu community that investigators would leave no stone unturned in bringing the gunmen to justice.

Authorities have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward. Cases of double murder and attempted murder have been opened for further investigation.

The ambush killing of two people in Mkhuhlu highlights the persistent threat of gun violence in rural Mpumalanga communities, where residents often travel isolated roads with limited police presence. For local businesses and families, such incidents erode confidence in safety and may discourage economic activity in the lowveld region. The survival of the three-year-old child underscores the indiscriminate nature of such attacks, and the ongoing manhunt will test law enforcement's capacity to deliver justice in under-resourced areas.
