Couple found dead after brutal attack in The Crags

A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murders of an elderly couple discovered on a farm in Glen Loerie, The Crags, outside Plettenberg Bay. The bodies of a 71-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man were found at the property on Wednesday evening, 25 March 2026, both bearing multiple injuries consistent with a violent assault.

The chain of events that led to the arrest began when a Mercedes-Benz was picked up by a licence plate recognition camera speeding along the R339 towards Uniondale at roughly 18:50 on Wednesday. The vehicle was subsequently flagged on a community safety WhatsApp group, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement.

Officers traced the registered address linked to the vehicle and made the grim discovery of the two victims inside the farm dwelling. Detectives immediately launched a coordinated operation involving both police units and local community safety structures to track down the fleeing suspect.

"A coordinated effort between police and community safety structures led to the pursuit of the identified vehicle. The vehicle later overturned near Uniondale, where the driver fled the scene on foot. The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter."

Suspect to face court after Uniondale arrest

The Mercedes-Benz overturned near Uniondale during the high-speed pursuit, after which the driver abandoned the wreck and attempted to escape on foot. He was captured a short time later by responding officers. Forensic specialists were dispatched to process both the farm crime scene and the vehicle crash site as part of the ongoing probe.

The arrested man, who hails from The Crags, is currently being held in custody in Uniondale. He is expected to make his first court appearance once formal charges have been laid against him. Investigators have not yet established a motive for the fatal attack and have indicated that this aspect remains under active investigation.

The Western Cape provincial police have called on members of the public who may have information relating to the double murder to come forward. Tipoffs can be provided by contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or through the My mobile application.

The killings have sent shockwaves through the tight-knit farming community around The Crags, where residents have expressed deep concern over the safety of elderly citizens living in rural areas. The swift arrest, made possible through the collaboration between technology, community networks and police, has been noted as a positive development in the case.
