Two arrested after body found dumped at Sandile Dam in Keiskammahoek - crime and justice in South Africa

Detectives crack case with no initial leads

Two suspects have been apprehended in connection with the murder of a man whose body was discovered at Sandile Dam in Keiskammahoek, Eastern Cape, following what police have described as a painstaking and methodical investigation that began with virtually no clues.

The lifeless body of an unidentified African male was found discarded at the dam on 15 March 2026, bearing a gunshot wound to the head. At the time of discovery, investigators had no witnesses, no identified victim, and no suspects to pursue — a set of circumstances that made the case exceptionally challenging from the outset.

However, persistent detective work eventually led to a positive identification of the deceased as Lwazi Roji, a resident of Mdantsane in the KuGompo area. As the inquiry deepened, investigators pieced together information revealing that Roji had left his home accompanied by one of the alleged suspects, ostensibly to transport a mechanic to Dimbaza. Neither Roji nor the suspect ever returned.

Stolen vehicle recovered, firearm seized

This crucial finding prompted detectives to track down the first suspect and recover a motor vehicle that had originally been entrusted to the pair by Roji's mother. A subsequent search of a property belonging to a relative of the suspect yielded the stripped remains of the stolen vehicle. The first suspect was taken into custody in Clubview, Qonce.

The investigation did not end there. Detectives followed further leads to Mngqesha Location, where they recovered a firearm and immediately placed a second suspect under arrest. Both individuals now face murder charges, while additional counts have been laid — one suspect has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, and the other faces a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Zinakile Freddie praised the collaborative effort demonstrated by the detective team, noting that they had managed to secure justice even in a case that initially appeared to offer no path forward.

"Your determination and dedication in revealing the truth in the case gives hope to the community and to the deceased family," Brigadier Freddie stated.

The arrests serve as a stark reminder that even in cases where perpetrators believe they have left no trace, dogged police work can still bring them to account. The suspects are expected to appear in court in due course as the legal process unfolds.

Rural communities across the Eastern Cape frequently contend with violent crime and limited policing resources, making successful investigations in remote areas critically important for public confidence in law enforcement. The resolution of this case could encourage greater community cooperation with detectives in similar under-resourced regions, potentially improving case closure rates. For local businesses and residents near Keiskammahoek, effective policing remains essential to sustaining economic activity and ensuring that rural tourism destinations like Sandile Dam are not overshadowed by safety concerns.
