Armed suspects storm home in deadly midnight raid

Three members of one family were killed in a horrific attack at Zululiyaduma area in Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal, after armed assailants stormed their home in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The victims — a 49-year-old mother, her 23-year-old son, and her 27-year-old daughter — were hacked with bush knives and fatally shot while they slept. The slain daughter was reportedly pregnant at the time of the attack.

A fourth family member, a 30-year-old woman, managed to survive the assault but was rushed to hospital where she remained in a critical condition.

"Four suspects armed with bush knives and a firearm entered the house while the victims were asleep. They opened fire and hacked them to death."

Police were alerted to the scene at approximately 01:00 on 18 August 2016 after receiving a complaint about a murder in the area. Officers who arrived at the homestead were met with what they described as a gruesome scene.

Robbery motive under investigation

Preliminary investigations at the crime scene revealed that airtime vouchers and cash had been stolen during the attack, suggesting robbery may have played a role. However, authorities confirmed that the full motive behind the killings had not yet been established.

Three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and a charge of house robbery are now under investigation. Detectives from Melmoth, working alongside the Glencoe K9 Unit, have launched an intensive search for the four suspects, who fled the scene in an unknown direction following the attack.

"We appeal to the community members to give us valuable information about the whereabouts of the suspects involved."

Police have urged anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111. All tip-offs can be provided anonymously.

Rural communities across KwaZulu-Natal continue to face devastating violent crime, and this attack in Melmoth underscores the vulnerability of families in areas where police response times can be lengthy. Such incidents erode public confidence in safety and may discourage economic activity in already underserved regions. The outcome of the investigation and whether suspects are apprehended will be closely watched as a measure of law enforcement capacity in rural policing.
