A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the assassination of a crucial witness who provided testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, the commission confirmed on Sunday.

Marius van der Merwe, who appeared before the judicial inquiry under the pseudonym "Witness D" on 14 November 2025, was murdered on 5 December 2025 — barely three weeks after delivering what the commission described as significant evidence. His testimony reportedly exposed allegations of serious misconduct within the City of Ekurhuleni and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that the inquiry had noted the announcement by police that an arrest had been made in the case. The identity of the suspect has not yet been disclosed.
Van der Merwe's appearance before the commission was considered pivotal in uncovering alleged corruption and irregular conduct linked to municipal structures in the Ekurhuleni metro. His killing sent shockwaves through the inquiry process and raised urgent questions about witness protection.
