Uncut diamonds seized during Namakwa operation
A man aged 32 was taken into custody over the weekend after law enforcement officers discovered uncut diamonds on his person during a targeted operation in the Namakwa district of the Northern Cape.
The arrest took place on Saturday as part of intensified efforts by the multidisciplinary Operation Vala Umgodi team, which has been clamping down on unlawful mining activities across the region. Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane confirmed that officers intercepted the suspect at a known mining hotspot.
"During their operation, the police stopped a man at a mine hotspot area and searched him. Uncut diamonds were found in his possession after which he was arrested."
The discovery of the illegal diamonds formed part of a broader enforcement drive that yielded further results in the coastal town of Kleinsee, where officers executed a raid on identified premises.
Drug trafficking arrests follow Kleinsee raid
The search of the Kleinsee property resulted in two additional arrests. The suspects, aged 30 and 40, were apprehended on charges related to drug trafficking. Officers recovered dagga, alcohol and a quantity of cash during the operation.
"During the operation, the members seized marijuana, liquor and an amount of cash which is believed to be the proceeds of crime."
Shemane indicated that the confiscated money is suspected to have been generated through criminal activity, and all seized items will form part of the evidence in the pending cases against the three accused.
The Vala Umgodi task team has maintained an uncompromising stance against the plague of illegal mining and associated criminal enterprises operating throughout the Namakwa district. Authorities have signalled that operations of this nature will continue as part of a sustained effort to dismantle unlawful mining networks and restore order in affected communities across the Northern Cape.
