Suspect killed after seizing officer's firearm in KZN police cells - crime and justice in South Africa

Detained man overpowers officers in Ntuzuma holding cells

A 22-year-old man arrested on attempted murder charges was fatally shot by a tactical unit after he allegedly seized a police officer's firearm and opened fire inside the holding cells at Ntuzuma police station in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday morning.

According to police spokesperson Col. Robert Netshiunda, the suspect reportedly overpowered and attacked two officers while being held in the detention facility over the weekend. During the violent altercation, the man allegedly managed to wrestle the cell keys away from one of the officers on duty.

"The police called for help and the suspect apparently grabbed an officer's firearm and opened fire on them in the holding cell."

What followed was a tense standoff as the armed suspect took several police members hostage within the station. The situation escalated until a specialised tactical team was dispatched to the scene to bring the crisis under control.

Upon arrival, members of the tactical unit engaged the suspect, who was shot during the operation. The 22-year-old was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Injured officers to receive psychological support

Two officers — a male and a female member — sustained serious injuries during the confrontation. Both are receiving medical treatment following the ordeal.

Netshiunda confirmed that those who were held captive during the incident would be given time away from their duties to recover from the traumatic experience.

"The officers who were held as hostages will be temporarily released from active operations so that they can receive the necessary psychological assistance."

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is expected to probe the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, as is standard procedure when a suspect dies in police custody or during a police operation. The incident has once again raised concerns about safety protocols within police detention facilities across the province.

The fatal shooting at Ntuzuma police station underscores persistent vulnerabilities in detention facility security across KwaZulu-Natal, raising urgent questions about how a detained suspect could access an officer's firearm. For communities already grappling with high crime rates, such incidents erode public confidence in law enforcement's ability to maintain order within its own facilities. The IPID investigation may prompt renewed scrutiny of holding cell protocols, potentially leading to stricter weapons handling procedures and improved safety measures at police stations nationwide.
