A member of the South African National Defence Force reportedly surrendered to authorities after allegedly gunning down his 29-year-old girlfriend at her workplace in Malelane near Komatipoort on Tuesday, 12 October 2021.

Fatal shooting at Nkomazi Municipality premises

The deceased, identified as Wandile Lucia Khoza, was preparing to leave her shift at the Nkomazi Municipality offices at approximately 15h45 when the suspect allegedly entered the premises. A confrontation between the pair reportedly broke out, culminating in the fatal shooting. The man then fled the scene before emergency services arrived.

Paramedics and police were dispatched to the municipal building, but Khoza was declared dead on arrival. A murder docket was immediately registered and detectives launched a search for the suspect.

"The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela has condemned an incident which occured on Tuesday, 12 October 2021."

The 31-year-old suspect, who is said to be stationed at a military base in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, turned himself in at the Malelane police station on the evening of Wednesday, 13 October 2021. He also handed over his privately owned firearm, which has been seized and will be subjected to forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

Court appearance set for Friday

Mpumalanga's top police officer, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela, strongly condemned the killing. The provincial commissioner expressed dismay at the violent nature of the incident, which claimed the life of a young woman at her place of employment.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between Khoza and the suspect, who are understood to have been in an intimate relationship. The circumstances leading to the argument at the municipal offices remain under investigation.

The accused is expected to make his first appearance before the Nkomazi Magistrate's Court on Friday, 15 October 2021, where he will face a charge of murder. The firearm recovered from the suspect will form a critical piece of evidence in the prosecution's case against him.

The tragic incident has once again placed the spotlight on gender-based violence in the province, with law enforcement authorities urging communities to report any signs of domestic abuse before situations escalate to fatal outcomes.

South Africans continue to face alarming rates of gender-based violence, with incidents like workplace shootings highlighting how domestic disputes can turn fatal in public settings. The killing of a municipal employee during working hours raises urgent concerns about workplace safety and the accessibility of firearms, including among military personnel. As the case proceeds through the Nkomazi Magistrate's Court, its outcome may influence broader conversations around stricter firearm controls and improved support systems for domestic abuse victims.
