Domestic dispute turns fatal in Mpumalanga
A 54-year-old woman is set to face murder charges at the Acornhoek Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 17 June 2025, after she was apprehended in connection with the killing of her long-term partner at Boelang Trust in Acornhoek, Mpumalanga.
Law enforcement officers were alerted on Friday, 13 June 2025, after a male body was discovered inside a room at the property. When police arrived at the scene, they found the remains of a 63-year-old man lying on the ground, bearing visible bruising around his neck area.
Early findings from the investigation indicate that the deceased and his girlfriend of many years became embroiled in a heated argument on Thursday, 12 June 2025. The altercation allegedly escalated to the point where the suspect strangled the man, resulting in his death.
Suspect tracked down across provincial lines
Following the grim discovery, detectives on standby duty launched a swift manhunt that led them across provincial boundaries. The woman was eventually located and taken into custody in Makhushane Village, situated in the Phalaborwa area of Limpopo, on Saturday, 14 June 2025.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed his support for the arrest and made an impassioned plea to members of the public to find non-violent ways of resolving conflicts within intimate relationships and domestic settings.
"As a nation, we look up to our elders for guidance and wisdom. It is heart-breaking when disputes end in tragedy. We urge individuals to seek help and resolve issues through peaceful and lawful means rather than resorting to violence," said the General.
The case has once again placed the spotlight on the devastating toll of gender-based and domestic violence across the country, particularly within older communities where such incidents often go unreported. Authorities have repeatedly called on South Africans to make use of available support structures, including counselling services and community mediation, before conflicts reach a point of no return.
