Man remanded in custody on multiple sexual offence charge... - South African crime and justice news

Accused faces 13 counts under Sexual Offences Act

A 43-year-old man has been kept behind bars following his appearance at the Mossel Bay Magistrates' Court on Friday, 22 September 2023, where he faced charges of rape, sexual assault and sexual grooming. The matter was postponed to 04 October 2023 to allow for a formal bail application.

Investigators allege that the accused systematically groomed, sexually assaulted and raped the victim — now 16 years old — on numerous occasions over a two-year period between 2019 and 2021. The young victim eventually confided in a trusted individual, who then brought the disturbing allegations to the attention of law enforcement.

"The case was referred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) based in Mossel Bay which commenced with investigation which led to the subsequent arrest of the suspect on Wednesday, 20 September 2023 on mentioned charges."

Once the matter was reported, detectives from the specialist Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Mossel Bay took over the inquiry. Their work culminated in the suspect being apprehended on Wednesday, 20 September 2023.

Further charges anticipated as probe continues

The accused currently faces a total of 13 counts linked to contraventions of the Sexual Offences Act, among them statutory rape. Authorities have indicated that additional charges may still be brought against him as the investigation progresses.

The case has underscored the critical role played by specialist police units in addressing crimes against vulnerable members of society, particularly children. The FCS unit's intervention proved decisive in building a case that led to the suspect's arrest within days of the complaint being lodged.

Sexual grooming — a calculated process through which predators build trust with minors before subjecting them to abuse — remains a serious concern across South Africa. Experts continue to urge parents, guardians and community members to remain vigilant and to encourage children to speak out when they experience any form of inappropriate contact.

The accused is expected back in the Mossel Bay Magistrates' Court on 04 October 2023, where the question of whether he should be granted bail will be formally argued. Until then, he remains in police custody.
