Brutal attack claims life of elderly resident
A 62-year-old man was found dead inside his home on a smallholding near Kameeldrift-Oos, east of Pretoria, after what appears to have been a violent robbery on Thursday afternoon. The victim was discovered by a neighbour who shares the property, sparking a murder investigation that police say remains in its early stages.
Captain Johan van Dyk, spokesperson for the South African Police Service, confirmed that officers were alerted at 16:00 after the neighbour returned from work and noticed something amiss at the residence.
"The neighbour returned from work and noticed that the door of the house was open. He found the victim in a pool of blood on the floor."
Van Dyk said the deceased, whose identity has not yet been released, sustained a wound to his abdomen along with multiple bruises around his eyes. Scratches were also visible on his hands, suggesting a struggle may have taken place before he was overpowered. Paramedics confirmed the man had died at the scene.
Investigators believe the attackers forced their way into the home and confronted the victim. A mobile phone, a firearm and a side cutter were taken from the property during the incident. The man was last confirmed alive at 05:30 on Thursday morning.

A report drawn up by the local community policing forum sheds further light on the timeline and circumstances of the killing. According to the document, the attack is believed to have occurred between 06:00 and 08:00, and the abdominal wound is thought to have been caused by a gunshot.
"The suspects apparently gained access by breaking burglar bars in front of a window. Around 02:00 the same morning, items were stolen from a car on an adjacent property. The fences were cut and it is still unclear whether these incidents are related."
The revelation that a separate theft took place on a neighbouring property just hours before the murder has raised concerns among residents about whether a single group of criminals may have been operating in the area overnight. Cut fencing found nearby has added to speculation, though authorities have not yet drawn a definitive link between the two events.
