Brutal 2022 heist ends in lengthy sentence

A 34-year-old man has been handed a combined 20-year prison sentence for his involvement in a brutal business robbery that terrorised the Malipsdrift community in Limpopo's Sekhukhune District nearly four years ago.

Ntsiri Justice Mashiane was convicted by the Lebowakgomo Regional Court on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and malicious damage to property. The court imposed a total of 40 years behind bars — 15 years each for the robbery and attempted murder counts, and five years apiece for assault and malicious damage to property. However, with certain counts ordered to run concurrently, Mashiane will effectively spend 20 years in prison.

The court heard that on 4 September 2022, Mashiane and a group of accomplices burst into a funeral parlour in Malipsdrift, launching a violent attack on those inside. During the terrifying ordeal, the gang shot a male employee, severely assaulted six other men, and raped four women who were present at the premises.

The armed group fled the scene with victims' personal belongings, cellphones, and a safe containing an undisclosed sum of money, leaving those caught up in the attack deeply traumatised.

Dedicated investigation leads to conviction

Mashiane was apprehended during the first week of November 2022 by members of the Provincial Tracking Team and Provincial Investigation Unit in the Mankweng policing area. He was subsequently released on R3 000 bail on 12 November 2022 after the court took his ill health into consideration.

The case was later assigned to Sergeant Leseka Mashamaite of the Provincial Investigation Unit, who conducted a thorough and persistent investigation. His meticulous work in gathering and presenting evidence proved instrumental in securing the conviction.

"As the police, we will remain committed to fighting crime and protecting communities, and this conviction is a testament to that commitment. The community of Malipsdrift and Sekhukhune District can now take comfort in knowing that justice has been served and the perpetrator will be behind bars for the next two decades."

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the outcome, stating that the sentence delivers a powerful warning to would-be criminals that law enforcement will pursue every avenue to ensure offenders face the full might of the law.

The sentencing underscores the ongoing challenge of violent business robberies in rural South African communities, where small enterprises often operate with limited security. For residents of Malipsdrift and the broader Sekhukhune District, the conviction offers reassurance that sustained police investigation can yield accountability even in cases involving multiple perpetrators. The outcome may encourage greater cooperation between communities and law enforcement, though the fact that accomplices remain at large suggests the threat of similar attacks persists across Limpopo's commercial landscape.
