Police appeal for help finding missing Sterkspruit teenager - South African news

16-year-old girl missing since late November

Authorities in the Eastern Cape have launched an urgent appeal for public assistance in locating a teenage girl who vanished from her Sterkspruit home late last year and has not been heard from since.

Wendy Rabela, aged 16, was reported missing by her family on 27 November 2021 after she failed to return home and could no longer be contacted on her cellphone. She was last seen at her residence in Extension 1, Sterkspruit town, in the company of two male acquaintances.

The Grade 11 learner attends Sterkspruit Senior Secondary School and was wearing a navy, white and orange sport jacket along with a tracksuit when she was last spotted.

Description and contact details

Investigators have described Rabela as light-complexioned and standing above 1,63 metres tall. Despite ongoing efforts, police have been unable to establish her whereabouts or make contact with her.

"Any person that could assist the police in the tracing of Wendy Rabela, can contact Sterkspruit, Sergeant Vundisa on 083 925 01 82 or her family member on 071 7333 764."

The provincial commissioner's office in the Eastern Cape has urged members of the public who may have information regarding Rabela's disappearance to come forward without delay. Even the smallest detail could prove vital in bringing the teenager home safely.

Community members are reminded to report any sightings or relevant information directly to the authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands. Police have consistently cautioned against vigilante action, stressing that such conduct often hampers investigations and can lead to further harm.

The case remains under active investigation, and detectives are following every available lead to determine what happened to the young learner after she left her home nearly four months ago.

South Africa's high rate of missing children cases places enormous strain on families, law enforcement, and community safety networks, particularly in rural towns like Sterkspruit where resources are limited. The prolonged disappearance of a school-going teenager disrupts her education and leaves her vulnerable to exploitation or harm. Public cooperation remains essential, as tips from community members often prove decisive in resolving such cases and restoring accountability within local policing efforts.
