Two attacks in two nights at same location
Authorities in Lephalale are pursuing a suspect believed to be behind two violent crimes — an armed robbery and a separate rape — that took place on consecutive evenings at Silver Charms in the Lephalale policing area on 14 and 15 March 2026.
During the first attack on Saturday evening at approximately 22:00, a 36-year-old woman heard unusual sounds emanating from her garage. When she went to check, she was met by an unidentified middle-aged man brandishing a firearm. He ordered her onto the ground and demanded cash. The intruder then compelled the woman to unlock her banking application and used it to buy a betting voucher. He fled with a pair of women's boots.
The following night, Sunday at around 20:00, a 24-year-old woman was home alone when she encountered an unknown African male inside her dwelling after stepping out of the bathroom. The man, clad in a balaclava and gloves and carrying a firearm, physically assaulted and threatened the young woman before raping her.
Cash and laptop stolen in second attack
After the sexual assault, the suspect forced his victim to open storage containers, from which he took an estimated R1 500 in cash. He also made off with a laptop worth roughly R5 000. Investigators believe he broke into the property by forcing open a garage door — a method strikingly similar to the entry point used in the previous night's robbery.
Detectives believe the same individual may be responsible for both crimes, given the near-identical tactics employed. The robbery case is being handled by Lephalale Detectives, while the rape investigation falls under the Lephalale Family Violence, Sexual Offences and Child Protection Units.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed serious concern over the attacks and called on residents to take extra precautions to safeguard their homes, particularly garage access points.
"These incidents are deeply concerning. We urge residents to prioritise their safety by ensuring doors are locked and to immediately report any suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods," said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist in identifying the suspect to come forward. Investigations into both matters remain active.
Consecutive violent crimes at a single location in Lephalale underscore persistent concerns about residential security in smaller Limpopo towns, where under-resourced policing can leave communities vulnerable. For local residents and businesses, such incidents erode confidence in neighbourhood safety and may deter investment in the area. The linked investigations will test coordination between detective and specialised units, and their outcome could signal whether law enforcement capacity in rural policing precincts is keeping pace with escalating criminal tactics.
