Democratic Alliance mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, Helen Zille, has laid out an election manifesto detailing five key commitments to residents of the city on Saturday. The seasoned politician's pledges centre on restoring dependable water and electricity supply, as well as repairing the city's deteriorating road infrastructure.
"We will fill potholes within 72 hours, get 95% of traffic lights up and running and repaint road markings," Zille told media on Saturday. The manifesto places significant emphasis on tackling crime and restoring order across the city.
"We will crack down on crime, reclaim hijacked buildings and stop land occupations. We will have zero tolerance for illegal immigration. We will listen to whistleblowers, protect them and fire corrupt officials," she declared.
Zille further committed to establishing what she described as a "professional, modern government" should she secure the mayoral chain. This would involve appointing skilled professionals, incentivising strong performance and holding underperformers accountable, alongside overhauling the city's billing system and embracing modern technology to improve service delivery.
"Once elected, we will stop the rot, repair what is broken, and rebuild Johannesburg into a city its residents can be proud of - a city that delivers reliable services, ethical leadership, safer communities and real opportunities to work, live and succeed," Zille said on Saturday.
