Fatal shooting outside Mfuleni shop leaves one dead
Detectives from the Western Cape's Serious and Violent Crime unit are appealing to the public for help in tracking down an individual linked to a fatal shooting in Mfuleni that claimed one life and left another person critically wounded.
The incident unfolded on the evening of Saturday, 21 February 2026, at approximately 21:30, when two friends were waiting for food at a shop on the corner of Duif and Langeni Street in Driftsands, Mfuleni. Their routine outing turned deadly when a faded silver-brownish Datsun seven-seater vehicle pulled up at the café and three unidentified men emerged.
Without warning or apparent motive, the trio opened fire on the two victims in what investigators have described as a random attack. One of the victims sustained gunshot wounds to both legs and was physically assaulted by one of the assailants. The second victim was struck by bullets in the head and upper body, suffering catastrophic injuries.
"The second unidentified male was busy recording the whole ordeal and shouting at the gunman to shoot."
In a chilling detail, one of the three suspects was captured on surveillance footage filming the entire attack while urging the shooter to continue firing. After the assault, all three men fled the scene in the same vehicle they had arrived in.
One victim declared dead on arrival at hospital
Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Tragically, one of the victims was declared deceased upon arrival. The surviving victim received treatment for the gunshot wounds sustained to both legs, along with injuries from the physical assault.
Provincial detectives have since obtained surveillance camera footage from the area surrounding the crime scene. After careful analysis of the recordings, investigators identified an individual they consider a person of interest who could provide crucial assistance in advancing the murder and attempted murder investigation.
Photographs of the individual have been circulated by the provincial police, and members of the public who may recognise the person or have any information about the incident are being urged to come forward. Anyone with details that could assist detectives is encouraged to contact their nearest police station or provide information through official crime-reporting channels.
