Farmer regains consciousness after helicopter airlift to Cape Town
A West Coast farmer is making steady progress in hospital after being viciously attacked by suspected livestock thieves who left him for dead on a rural road between Elandsbaai and Lambertsbaai on Thursday.
Hugo Louw was set upon after he stumbled across the suspects butchering sheep in broad daylight along the R365 road at approximately 11:55. The assault left him with severe head injuries, and he was airlifted by emergency helicopter to a Cape Town hospital for specialist medical care.
"He is showing progress. But it seems to me that this is only the beginning of a long road of recovery."
Those were the words of Brian Nieuwoudt, a close friend of Louw, who provided an update on the farmer's condition on Saturday. Although Nieuwoudt had not visited Louw in person since the incident, he confirmed that his friend had regained consciousness in hospital.
Nieuwoudt described the sheer brutality of the assault, saying the attackers clearly intended to end Louw's life. He believes the suspects left the scene assuming the farmer was already dead after the savage beating he endured.
Three suspects nabbed as police find bloodied clothing
Swift police work led to the arrest of three suspects shortly after the attack. Capt. FC van Wyk, a police spokesperson, confirmed that officers spotted the accused hiding in nearby bushes while Louw was being transported to hospital. The suspects were found with bloodstains on their clothing, and a slaughtered sheep was discovered concealed in the undergrowth close to the scene.
Van Wyk confirmed that the trio would appear in court in due course to face charges of attempted murder and stock theft.
Friends and community members have rallied around the well-known farmer, who Nieuwoudt described as far more than just an agriculturalist. Louw is widely recognised as a musician and storyteller with a distinctive West Coast charm and a genuine love of entertaining people.
"I am very angry. Everyone I've spoken to about the attack so far says it's enough — a line must be drawn. Criminals no longer have any respect for life."
Nieuwoudt's frustration echoed a growing sentiment in farming communities across the region, where rural residents continue to call for stronger action against violent crime targeting those who work the land.
Stock theft and violent attacks on farmers remain a pressing concern for rural communities along the West Coast and beyond, threatening agricultural livelihoods and the food supply chain that sustains local economies.
