Task team swoops on Dingaan Hostels after tip-off

A targeted operation in Galeshewe led to the arrest of two men after members of the Frances Baard Illicit Mining Task Team acted on intelligence pointing to a wanted suspect hiding at the Dingaan Hostels on Monday, 2 March 2026.

The multi-disciplinary unit had been carrying out vehicle and high-visibility patrols across the Kimberley and Galeshewe precincts when the tip-off came through. Officers moved quickly to the identified location, where they spotted a man discarding an object beneath a parked vehicle.

A closer inspection revealed a clear plastic bag stuffed with mandrax tablets. A more extensive search of the vehicle uncovered two additional transparent bags containing suspected mandrax, bringing the total estimated street value of the seized narcotics to R24 000.

"The Frances Baard District Illicit Mining Task Team remains committed in the eradication of drugs within the district, and efforts will be bolstered."

Authorities also impounded a white Toyota Tazz believed to have been used in the commission of a crime. The 46-year-old man found at the scene was placed under arrest for possession of drugs.

Wanted armed robbery suspect also apprehended

During the same operation, a second individual — a 44-year-old man who had been sought in connection with an armed robbery — was taken into custody. His arrest brought the total number of suspects detained during the Galeshewe swoop to two.

Both men were expected to appear before a Kimberley court following their remand in custody. The operation underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in the Northern Cape to clamp down on drug-related offences and violent crime in the Frances Baard District.

Police have urged community members to continue providing information that can assist in removing dangerous substances from the streets, emphasising that collaborative efforts between residents and officers remain essential in the fight against narcotics and organised crime in the region.

South Africans in communities like Galeshewe continue to bear the brunt of drug trafficking and violent crime, which erode safety and economic stability in already vulnerable neighbourhoods. The seizure of narcotics worth R24 000 and the arrest of an armed robbery suspect highlight the direct threat these activities pose to local residents and small businesses. Sustained collaboration between law enforcement and communities will be critical in determining whether such operations can deliver lasting reductions in crime across the Northern Cape.
