Two arrested after stabbing and shooting at Limpopo tavern - crime and justice in South Africa

Two individuals have been taken into custody following a violent altercation at a drinking establishment in Moletji GaMatlou Village that left four people hospitalised with stab and gunshot wounds.

The incident unfolded on Saturday evening, 10 February 2024, at approximately 22:00, when chaos erupted at a tavern falling under the Seshego policing precinct in Limpopo.

Woman held at knifepoint sparks violent confrontation

Preliminary investigations reveal that two vehicles pulled up at the venue, with some occupants heading inside to purchase refreshments while a female passenger stepped away briefly. Passengers who had remained in the vehicles were startled by the screams of the woman, who was spotted being forcibly dragged by an armed suspect brandishing a knife.

A female patron who attempted to come to the woman's aid was stabbed by the assailant. As all occupants from both vehicles rushed to help free the captive woman, the suspect refused to release her, and a second group of individuals joined him in the ensuing brawl. The suspect also caused damage to one of the parked vehicles.

"The 24-year-old suspect, who held the woman hostage, was detained under police guard and is facing charges of Assault GBH and malicious damage to property."

During the struggle, a friend of one of the victims confronted the knife-wielding suspect in a bid to rescue the woman. When the suspect stabbed him as well, the man drew a firearm and discharged shots at the attacker — but tragically struck his own companion in the process.

Two suspects face serious charges

Paramedics and law enforcement officers were summoned to the scene, and all four injured individuals were rushed to hospital for medical treatment. The 24-year-old suspect faces charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm as well as malicious damage to property. A second suspect, aged 34, has been charged with attempted murder, and his licensed firearm was seized as part of the ongoing probe.

Both accused are expected to make their first appearance at the Seshego Magistrate's Court in due course.

"Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has condemned the reckless behaviour of some of the community members at the liquor outlets and has urged them to refrain from carrying dangerous weapons to avoid this type of incident."

Limpopo's Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has spoken out strongly against the dangerous conduct displayed by certain patrons at liquor establishments, calling on community members to leave weapons at home when visiting such venues. Investigations into the matter are continuing.

Tavern violence remains a persistent public safety concern across South Africa, with incidents like this highlighting the dangers of weapons being carried into drinking establishments. The hospitalisation of four people and the accidental shooting of a bystander underscore how quickly situations can escalate, placing strain on emergency services and local communities. Calls from provincial police leadership for patrons to leave weapons at home may prompt renewed discussions around tavern safety regulations and enforcement measures in Limpopo.
