Brutal attack followed argument at Silobela tavern

Three young men are set to apply for bail after being charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 23-year-old man at a drinking establishment near Carolina in Mpumalanga. Kwanele Khumalo (21), Khulekani Sibiya (21) and Siyabonga Nkosi (22) were expected to lodge their bail application at the Carolina Magistrate's Court on Monday, 22 May 2023.

The trio were apprehended by law enforcement officers at Silobela, outside Carolina, on 17 May 2023 following an intensive investigation into the killing of Sabelo Khumalo (23). The deceased was attacked at a local tavern on 30 April 2023 after a dispute escalated into violence.

Authorities indicated that a verbal confrontation broke out between the accused and the victim along with his companions at the venue. The altercation quickly turned physical, prompting Khumalo and his friends to flee the scene in fear for their safety. Tragically, the 23-year-old was reportedly trapped by his attackers, who allegedly inflicted multiple stab wounds upon him. He sustained severe injuries and later died.

All three accused made their initial appearance before the Carolina Magistrate's Court on Friday, 19 May 2023, where they were denied release and ordered to remain in custody pending their formal bail hearing.

Police chief condemns weapon-carrying at liquor outlets

Mpumalanga's Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, expressed deep concern over the incident and sharply criticised individuals who frequent drinking establishments while carrying dangerous weapons.

"The behaviour of patrons who go to liquor outlets with dangerous weapons poses a serious danger to others," Lieutenant General Manamela said.

The senior officer also called on owners and operators of taverns and other licensed premises to adhere strictly to existing regulations. She emphasised the responsibility of business owners to create and maintain a safe environment for all patrons visiting their establishments.

The case has once again highlighted the ongoing scourge of violent crime at social gatherings across the province, with police urging community members to resolve disputes peacefully and refrain from carrying weapons to places of entertainment.

Tavern violence remains a persistent threat to community safety across Mpumalanga, where social gatherings frequently become sites of deadly conflict. For local business owners, such incidents risk stricter regulatory enforcement and reduced patronage, potentially undermining livelihoods in areas already facing economic pressure. Families and young people bear the greatest cost, losing lives to preventable disputes. Continued police calls for disarmament at drinking venues may signal forthcoming policy measures aimed at curbing weapon-related violence in entertainment spaces.
