Hawks swoop on Ferndale premises after tip-off
Ten individuals have been taken into custody following a major drug operation in Johannesburg that uncovered cannabis products valued at more than R5 million. The suspects, aged between 25 and 50, were apprehended on Thursday, 27 March 2026, after law enforcement officers acted swiftly on intelligence received the previous day.
The operation was set in motion on the afternoon of 26 March 2026 when the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit stationed in the West Rand received a tip-off regarding a suspected narcotics shipment. According to authorities, the consignment had allegedly been transported from a courier firm in Douglasdale to a property in the Ferndale area of Johannesburg.
Hawks operatives, working in conjunction with the West Rand K9 unit, moved quickly to act on the intelligence and proceeded to the identified premises. Upon their arrival, officers discovered several suspects in the process of offloading boxes from a vehicle at the location.
The moment the suspects became aware of the police presence, they attempted to flee in different directions. Officers managed to apprehend the fleeing individuals and subsequently conducted a thorough search of the property. During this sweep, a further six suspects were discovered concealed in various rooms within the premises.
Cannabis haul worth millions seized
The comprehensive raid yielded a significant quantity of diverse cannabis products, with an estimated street value exceeding R5 million. All ten suspects face charges related to dealing in and manufacturing illegal narcotics.
"The joint efforts of the team involved are commendable, and they are encouraged to continue combatting the scourge of drugs in Gauteng as well as countrywide."
Those were the sentiments expressed by the Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, who praised the collaborative work between the various units that led to the successful operation. The senior officer emphasised the importance of sustained efforts to rid communities of the drug trade across the province and the broader country.
The arrested individuals are scheduled to make their first court appearance before the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, 30 March 2026, where they will formally face charges linked to drug dealing and manufacturing offences.
