Severe thunderstorms set to batter Limpopo as rain spreads across SA on Tuesday - South African news

The South African Weather Service has placed north-eastern Limpopo on high alert ahead of Tuesday's forecast, with a Yellow Level 2 warning in effect for severe thunderstorm conditions. Residents in the affected areas face the prospect of heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and frequent lightning strikes, which could trigger localised flooding and pose risks to property and communities.

Under the weather service's colour-coded warning framework, a yellow alert indicates a moderate threat requiring awareness and caution, while an orange warning represents a more serious risk demanding greater preparedness. The numerical levels assigned to warnings reflect the probability of adverse impacts, with Levels 2 and 6 indicating a higher likelihood and Level 4 pointing to a reduced chance of severe consequences.

Gauteng is in for an overcast start before skies become partly cloudy with comfortable warmth, though isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms can be expected during the day. Mpumalanga faces cooler, cloud-laden skies with periodic showers and thunderstorm activity, particularly across the Lowveld where rainfall is likely to be more persistent. In Limpopo, predominantly cloudy and cool conditions will prevail, with warmer patches in select areas and thunderstorm activity ranging from scattered to widespread across the northern Lowveld.

North West province will see morning cloud in its eastern reaches while western and south-western districts enjoy partly cloudy, warm to hot weather, with isolated showers and thunderstorms becoming more frequent towards the north-east. Free State can expect patchy early morning fog giving way to pleasant, partly cloudy skies and warm to hot temperatures, with light rainfall possible across the far northern and eastern parts. The Northern Cape coastline will remain cool, while inland areas warm up considerably, with afternoon cloud building in the east and sporadic showers and thunderstorms limited to the far north-eastern corner.

The Western Cape is set for a largely clear, mild to warm day, though cloud may develop over south-western regions by nightfall, accompanied by moderate to brisk southerly and south-easterly coastal winds. The western Eastern Cape will enjoy clear, warm conditions with gentle north-easterly breezes giving way to light south-westerlies later, while the eastern half of the province sees early fog lifting to reveal clear skies and warmth with light to moderate coastal winds from the north-east.

KwaZulu-Natal's interior will experience morning fog that clears to partly cloudy and warm weather, though south-western areas remain cooler. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are anticipated across the northern and western reaches of the province, while coastal winds transition from southerly and south-easterly in the north to moderate east to north-easterly breezes spreading northward through the evening.
