Detectives work through the night to track down teenage suspect
A second suspect has been apprehended in connection with the brazen attack on three Members of Parliament in Philippi, Cape Town, after Western Cape serious and violent crime detectives pursued leads throughout the night into Wednesday morning.
The suspect, a 16-year-old youth, was taken into custody in Browns Farm during the early hours of Wednesday and has since been formally charged. His arrest follows that of the first suspect, an 18-year-old man, who was detained on Tuesday evening after presenting himself at a medical facility in Lentegeur seeking treatment for injuries.
Investigators believe the older suspect sustained a gunshot wound during the incident itself, after one of the occupants of the targeted vehicle reportedly discharged a firearm in response to the assault. He remains hospitalised under police guard.
Third suspect still at large as investigation intensifies
According to preliminary information gathered by detectives, three male suspects carried out the attack on Tuesday afternoon. With two now in custody, the search for the third individual continues, and law enforcement officials have indicated that a further arrest is anticipated in the near future.
"Western Cape serious and violent crime detectives in pursuance of leads in the investigation into an attack on three members of Parliament in Philippi on Tuesday afternoon worked through the night and in the early hours of Wednesday morning effected the arrest of a second suspect."
Both arrested suspects face charges of attempted murder and attempted hijacking in relation to the incident, which saw three parliamentarians targeted in broad daylight in one of Cape Town's most volatile areas.
