Detectives work through the night to track down teenage suspect
A second suspect has been apprehended in connection with the brazen attack on three Members of Parliament in Philippi, Cape Town, after Western Cape serious and violent crime detectives pursued leads throughout the night into Wednesday morning.
The suspect, a 16-year-old youth, was taken into custody in Browns Farm during the early hours of Wednesday and has since been formally charged. His arrest follows that of the first suspect, an 18-year-old man, who was detained on Tuesday evening after presenting himself at a medical facility in Lentegeur seeking treatment for injuries.
Investigators believe the older suspect sustained a gunshot wound during the incident itself, after one of the occupants of the targeted vehicle reportedly discharged a firearm in response to the assault. He remains hospitalised under police guard.
Third suspect still at large as investigation intensifies
According to preliminary information gathered by detectives, three male suspects carried out the attack on Tuesday afternoon. With two now in custody, the search for the third individual continues, and law enforcement officials have indicated that a further arrest is anticipated in the near future.
"Western Cape serious and violent crime detectives in pursuance of leads in the investigation into an attack on three members of Parliament in Philippi on Tuesday afternoon worked through the night and in the early hours of Wednesday morning effected the arrest of a second suspect."
Both arrested suspects face charges of attempted murder and attempted hijacking in relation to the incident, which saw three parliamentarians targeted in broad daylight in one of Cape Town's most volatile areas.
The swift response by the province's specialised crime unit underscores the gravity with which authorities are treating the matter. The attack on elected public representatives has heightened concerns around the safety of political figures operating in high-crime communities across the Western Cape.
The investigation remains active, with detectives continuing to pursue all available leads to bring the outstanding suspect to justice.
The targeting of elected representatives in a high-crime area like Philippi raises urgent questions about the safety of public officials serving communities most affected by violent crime across South Africa. For residents and businesses in these areas, such incidents deepen insecurity and may discourage political engagement and service delivery. The swift arrests suggest law enforcement capacity exists, and the ongoing manhunt for the third suspect will test whether sustained investigative pressure can deliver full accountability.
