A 26-year-old man is recovering in hospital under police guard after being apprehended and assaulted by community members following an armed robbery in Nkuzana village, outside Hlanganani in Limpopo.
The incident unfolded on the evening of Friday, 11 October 2024, when a group of four individuals allegedly ambushed a 20-year-old man as he made his way home after withdrawing money from a nearby ATM. One of the attackers was reportedly carrying a firearm, which was used to threaten the young man during the ordeal.
Victim stabbed during violent mugging
The suspects stripped the victim of his cellphone, bank card and cash before allegedly plunging a blade into his back, leaving him wounded. Despite his injuries, the young man managed to raise the alarm, calling on nearby residents for assistance.
Community members responded swiftly, pursuing the fleeing suspects through the area. They succeeded in catching one of the four alleged robbers, but the situation quickly escalated as the crowd turned violent, meting out punishment on the captured man before law enforcement could intervene.
Officers stationed at Hlanganani arrived promptly and extracted the suspect from the hostile crowd. He was immediately taken to a medical facility, where he remains under police supervision while receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the community assault.
Top cop condemns vigilante action
Authorities have confirmed that the arrested individual will be brought before the Hlanganani Magistrate's Court to answer charges of robbery with a firearm once he has sufficiently recovered from his injuries. A manhunt for the remaining three suspects is ongoing.
