Multi-agency operation targets unlawful mining in Pixley Ka Seme District
Law enforcement authorities have arrested eleven individuals suspected of conducting illegal mining operations near Niekerkshoop in the Northern Cape's Pixley Ka Seme District.
The suspects, ranging in age from 19 to 42 years old and including one foreign national, were taken into custody on Thursday, 19 March 2026, following a coordinated multi-disciplinary operation. The joint effort brought together members from Operation Vala Umgodi, the Upington Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (DPCI), Priority Crime Specialist Investigation (PCSI) and the Asset Forfeiture Unit.
Officers descended on a targeted mining site on the outskirts of Niekerkshoop and discovered the group actively engaged in mining activities. None of those apprehended were able to produce valid permits authorising them to mine in the area, according to authorities.
Investigators also seized a significant quantity of machinery, equipment and tools found at the scene, all believed to have been utilised in the commission of unlawful mining. Several bags containing suspected minerals were also confiscated as evidence.
Provincial Commissioner lauds joint operation
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola praised the seamless cooperation between the various law enforcement agencies involved in the operation.
"The collaborative approach between law enforcement agencies demonstrates our commitment to stamping the authority of the state in the fight against illicit mining in the Northern Cape," Lieutenant General Otola said.
The arrests form part of an ongoing drive to eradicate illegal mining across the province, with authorities intensifying their efforts to clamp down on those exploiting the Northern Cape's mineral resources without proper authorisation. The operation underscores the determination of security forces to disrupt criminal networks profiting from the country's natural resources.
The suspects are expected to face charges related to illegal mining and are due to appear in court in the coming days.
Illegal mining remains a significant threat to South Africa's mineral wealth and local economies, with operations like these diverting revenue from communities that depend on regulated extraction for jobs and development. The Northern Cape, rich in diamonds and other minerals, is particularly vulnerable to criminal syndicates exploiting its vast rural landscape. Continued multi-agency cooperation will be critical in determining whether authorities can sustainably curb illegal mining or whether criminal networks simply relocate to other remote areas.
