Operation Vala Umgodi targets unlawful mining in Northern Cape
Nine individuals have been taken into custody following a targeted crackdown on illegal mining operations in the Frances Baard District of the Northern Cape. The arrests, which took place on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, form part of the ongoing Operation Vala Umgodi initiative aimed at stamping out illicit mining across the province.
Law enforcement officers acted on intelligence pointing to a group of people allegedly carrying out unauthorised mining at a known site in the area. A search was subsequently conducted at the identified location, where the suspects were found inside the mining zone with what is believed to be diamond-bearing gravel in their possession.
The arrested individuals comprise two women and seven men, all aged between 40 and 70 years old. They face charges of trespassing and illegal mining after being apprehended on Sol Plaatje private property situated in the Florianville mining area outside Kimberley.
