Educator fatally shot while driving to school
Police in Mqanduli have issued an urgent appeal for public assistance following the fatal shooting of a 55-year-old female teacher who was gunned down while travelling to work on Monday morning.
The incident took place at approximately 06:30 on 28 July 2025 in the Makhumsheni locality within the Nyezi Administrative Area of Mqanduli in the Eastern Cape. The educator was behind the wheel of her vehicle, making her way to Gengqe locality where she was employed as a teacher, when a man on foot opened fire on her.
Two family members — boys aged 17 and 20 — were travelling with the deceased at the time of the attack. Both escaped the ordeal without any physical injuries.
Authorities urge community to come forward
The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner's office has called on members of the public who may possess information that could lead to the identification, arrest and successful prosecution of the suspect to make contact with law enforcement without delay.
"Mqanduli police urge anyone with information that can lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the suspect to come forward with such information."
The killing of an educator on her daily commute has sent shockwaves through the rural community. Investigators are working to establish the motive behind the brazen daylight attack and are following all available leads.
