Young vegetable seller's body discovered in bushes
Limpopo police have launched an intensive search for a suspect following the brutal killing of a 12-year-old girl whose body was found discarded in bushes near a farm in Ha-Ravele Village on Monday morning, 16 September 2024. The child, from the nearby Ha-Ramantsha Village in the Vhembe District, had been selling vegetables in her neighbourhood the previous day before she vanished without a trace.
Relatives grew concerned when the young girl did not return home on Sunday evening after going out to sell produce. A frantic search by family members proved unsuccessful, and law enforcement was contacted the following morning. A missing person case was promptly opened at the local police station and detectives were deployed without delay.
Tragically, the search ended in heartbreak when investigators located the child's partially clothed body concealed in dense bush near a farm in Ha-Ravele Village. Evidence at the scene pointed to strangulation as a possible cause of death. Her vegetables and clothing were also recovered from the surrounding area.
Initial information gathered by detectives indicates the victim was last observed in the company of an African male, walking in the direction of Ha-Ravele Village. A murder docket has been registered, while a potential charge of sexual assault is being held in abeyance pending the outcome of a post-mortem examination.
Senior police leadership condemns killing
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed outrage at the senseless killing of a child, labelling the act as utterly reprehensible.
"This is despicable and inhumane."
Lieutenant General Hadebe called on parents and guardians across the province to exercise heightened vigilance when it comes to the safety and movements of their children. She further made an urgent plea for community members with any knowledge of the suspect or the circumstances surrounding the murder to come forward and assist investigators.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Ha-Ramantsha and Ha-Ravele communities, with residents expressing deep anguish over the loss of a child who had simply been going about the everyday task of selling vegetables to support her family. Police have assured the public that all available resources are being channelled into tracking down the perpetrator and bringing them to justice.
Anyone with information that could aid the investigation is urged to contact their nearest police station or the Crime Stop hotline. All tip-offs can be provided anonymously.
The murder of a child engaged in the simple act of selling vegetables highlights the persistent vulnerability of young people in rural South African communities. Cases like this raise urgent concerns about child safety in areas where children contribute to household income through informal trade. The outcome of the police investigation and any subsequent prosecution will be closely watched as a measure of the justice system's capacity to protect the nation's most vulnerable citizens.
