Midnight bust at Somerset Park complex
A 62-year-old foreign national is set to face drug dealing and possession charges after law enforcement officers intercepted him with cocaine valued at an estimated R8 million at a residential complex in Somerset Park, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of Monday, 23 March 2026.
The arrest followed an extensive intelligence-driven operation targeting a suspect believed to be involved in the distribution of illegal narcotics in the area. Officers had been conducting sustained surveillance on the premises where the individual was reportedly based, monitoring his movements closely before making their move.
Shortly after midnight on Monday morning, police observed the suspect walking through the grounds of a residential complex situated on Ilchester Avenue in the Canterbury section of Somerset Park. He was carrying a backpack that immediately drew the attention of the surveillance team.
"Upon searching the backpack, a substance suspected to be gold cocaine was found in his possession. The substance weighed almost 7kg, with an estimated street value of R8 million."
Cash and cellphones also confiscated
When officers moved in and stopped the man, a thorough search of the backpack revealed what is believed to be gold cocaine weighing close to seven kilograms. The discovery of such a substantial quantity of the drug points to a significant distribution operation in the region, according to investigators.
In addition to the narcotics haul, police confiscated an undisclosed sum of money along with three cellphones found in the suspect's possession. These items are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation into the drug network the man is alleged to have been supplying.
The suspect was taken into custody and faces charges of dealing in drugs as well as possession of illegal substances. He is scheduled to appear before the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday, 23 March 2026, where prosecutors are expected to oppose bail given the severity of the charges and the value of the narcotics seized.
The operation underscores the continued efforts by KwaZulu-Natal law enforcement to dismantle drug distribution networks operating within residential communities across the province. Intelligence-led policing has proven instrumental in identifying and apprehending individuals involved in high-level narcotics trafficking in the region.
South Africans continue to grapple with the devastating effects of drug trafficking networks operating within ordinary residential communities, and this significant cocaine seizure highlights how suburban neighbourhoods increasingly serve as distribution hubs. The arrest could disrupt local supply chains temporarily, potentially affecting both street-level dealing and broader organised crime operations in KwaZulu-Natal. Whether this leads to further arrests within the wider network will depend on the intelligence extracted from the confiscated cellphones and ongoing investigations.
